The Jones Institute (JI) was established in 1988 by Randall Kusunose PT, OCS, JSCCI and Dr. Lawrence Jones DO, FAAO and specializes in the instruction of Jones Counterstrain or Strain and Counterstrain, and Fascial Counterstrain as developed by Brian Tuckey PT, OCS, JSCC. The JI has served as a vehicle through which Dr. Jones, Randall Kusunose, and Brian Tuckey have taught their techniques to a variety of health practitioners around the world.
In 1986, Dr. Jones was teaching a limited number of Counterstrain classes, primarily to osteopaths. He noticed that the number of osteopaths who adopted Counterstrain as a regular intervention in their treatment paradigm was low, due to the osteopathic profession moving away from their manual roots and practicing more like allopathic physicians. In his seventies, Dr. Jones was concerned that if he were to pass away, Counterstrain would die with him. As a result, Randall Kusunose introduced him to physical therapists as a potential audience for his technique.
Through the creation of The Jones Institute and the targeting of physical therapists as an audience, Counterstrain grew in popularity and quickly spread across the United States. Over the last 15 years, The Jones Institute has contracted with affiliate companies in France, Italy, Australia, Austria, Taiwan, and China, with more countries on the horizon. Most recently, the Fascial Counterstrain curricula has been added to our course offerings to the credit of Brian Tuckey and his development of system specific techniques.
Today, the progression of Counterstrain continues across the world with Dr. Jones’ original vision intact: to spread the gift of Counterstrain far and wide.
